I made these paintings during the early months of motherhood. It was summer, and I was starting to come back to certain parts of artist myself after being deeply entrenched in a very different type of bodily and emotional endeavor. It was like an awakening. Or so I thought it would be. The truth is that I’m still waking up and growing into motherhood each day.
These paintings document an old self-language. A language that gave me certainty and stability in my art-making when postpartum had turned much of my world upside down (in the very best, but also very challenging ways).
I’m sharing these paintings almost a year off from making them. And now they feel like old friends. Markers of time. Like a shared nod across a bustling room. I hope they can feel the same for you.
